Dr Hughson is a retired Professor of Pathology and former Chair and Chief of Service of the Department of Pathology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. He is a 1971 graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He has held academic and administrative pathology positions with the Medical University of South Carolina, Texas Tech University, Oklahoma University, The State University of New York at Stony Brook, and with the Veterans Administration. Dr Hughson’s major interests are in renal and urogenital pathology. He continues a primary clinical and research effort in renal disease but with a more recent clinical and research interest in breast cancer and infectious diseases in developing countries. Dr Hughson has been working in Kurdistan since 2004. This began with teaching visits and small research and development projects funded through the United States Agricultural and Industrial Development (USAID). After his retirement in 2007, he has been a full-time consultant in pathology at Shorsh Hospital, Sulaimaniyah and together with Dr Runak Majid and Dr Hemin Hassan has established a histopathology laboratory with immunohistochemistry and renal pathology services. The Shorsh Hospital histopathology laboratory provides support to Hewa Hospital the Regional Cancer Center and to the Erbil, Sulaimaniyah, and Dohuk nephrology and dialysis centers. Shorsh/Hewa Hospitals together with Sulaimaniyah University have on-going research programs in breast cancer (Dr Runak, principal investigator), infectious diseases (Dr Hemin, principal investigator), and lymphoma (Dr Rafil, Dohuk, principal investigator).Dr Hughson maintains research affiliations in kidney disease with the Centre for Chronic Disease at the University of Queensland, Queensland, and Monash University, Victoria, Australia.

  Retired in 2008 as Professor Emeritus, University of Mississippi Medical center, Jackson, Mississippi. Began coming to Kurdistan in 2004 as part of the Consortium for International Development under a USAID contract with the University of Mississippi Medical Center. After retirement in the US, moved to Sulaimaniah as Consultant Pathologist, Shorsh General and Hewa Regional Oncology Hospitals in Sulaimaniyah. At Shorsh developed the special procedures and immunohistochemistry laboratory. Major area of work has been in histopathology with special interest in kidney disease and the application of pathology to epidemiology. Research affiliations are ongoing in kidney disease with the Centre for Chronic Disease at the University of Queensland and Monash University. At Shorsh/Hewa Hospitals and Sulaimaniyah University, research programs are conducted in breast cancer (Dr Runak, PI) and kidney disease.
