Hunsucker Age: 50 Michael Hunsucker came up with an automatic board eraser 30 years ago sitting in his college aerodynamics class. He had been scrawling formulas for an airplane design assignment on the whiteboard. Though its emotional origins might have come from childhood, that day in college he conceived a computerized, motorized eraser mounted on a track that could be placed on any chalk or white board and wipe it clean with a liquid detergent. For years the idea floated into and out of his head, until he finally decided to go see a patent attorney. He believes his now patented automatic eraser will find a market in schools that cannot afford interactive digital boards. His invention, he says, will “help keep teachers in control of their classes because they’ll never have to turn their backs.” He also sees it wiping clean the Xs and Os of student and professional sports teams as well as corporate boardroom white boards. Scoring the patent took years of drafting documents and going through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s process. But finally, on June 5, the government stamped its approval. Though this is Hunsucker’s first patent, he adamantly believes it won’t be his last. His sense of accomplishment fed the bug, which has now passed onto his three children. “They love that their father has a patent,” he says. “Now my kids are trying to come up with their own inventions. They’re asking themselves, ‘What does the world need?’ It’s really sparked their creative energy.” Along with Hunsucker’s, the U.S. patent office issued 5,459 patents on June 4-8.
