“What’s an exosome?” is the most common response I receive when I mention my research—and my response is often “if you don’t know, you will very soon!” Granted: at the beginning of my graduate studies, I had never heard of an exosome, but now as I look ahead from the end of my PhD, I see the immense potential of exosomes and other extracellular vesicles as the future of liquid biopsy biomarkers and therapeutic agents, and seek to use my experience to further develop these technologies for widespread use. My varied background—spanning from analytical chemistry to the field of extracellular vesicles to gender, sexuality, and women’s studies—has taught me that problem solving is best done through creative, interdisciplinary approaches. I approach exosomes from a nanotechnology perspective, using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and other biophysical techniques to characterize exosomes and other extracellular vesicles at the nanoscale, single particle level.
