During a 40 year career Michael Sharp has become one of the UK's most experienced retailers with a wide knowledge of international markets and multiple retail channels. As a result he has a deep understanding of the numerous structural issues and conflicting priorities facing the retail sector. On succeeding to the role of CEO in September 2011 Michael agreed to a five year tenure with Nigel Northridge the former Chairman of Debenhams.During his five years as CEO he lead the development and successfully execution of a four pillared strategy focused on ensuring the brand was well positioned for a long term sustainable future following many years of under investment by previous management and private equity ownership. As planned Michael resigned in April 2016 and stepped down from his role as CEO on June 24th 2016 following the appointment of his successor. He has worked for Debenhams or its predecessor,The Burton Group since 1985. He joined Debenhams in 1997 following its demerger from the Burton Group and was appointed to the board in 1999. He became Chief Operating Officer in 2004 as Debenhams was taken private and Deputy CEO in 2008. In his early career Michael worked for Lewis's Selfridges and Littlewoods. Michael is an Honorary Professor of Glasgow Caledonian University.
