I am a technical writer, photographer, videographer, and published author with extensive experience in the knife, tactical equipment, and personal-defense industries. I specialize in creating detailed product education and instructional materials and have authored over 200 articles, a dozen books, and more than 20 full-length instructional videos.A lifelong martial artist, I am the Founder and Lead Instructor of the Martial Blade Concepts (MBC) and Counter-Blade Concepts (CBC) systems of self-defense and regularly teach seminars for civilians, law enforcement, and specialized duty-bound personnel worldwide. I write all copy for the company's printed and digital catalogs, product information guides, and web site, as well as our monthly e-newsletter the Spyderco byte. I am also responsible for writing and editing all key company communications, including warranty policies, instructional materials, product announcements, and press releases.As a member of Spyderco's Marketing Team, I play a critical role in providing creative input to the company's print and digital marketing efforts and personally manage our print media relationships with publishers worldwide. Through my training in a wide variety of martial arts and my experience as an intelligence analyst, I developed several logical, extremely practical personal defense systems that have earned worldwide recognition.My best-known systems are Martial Blade Concepts (MBC) and Counter-Blade Concepts (CBC). Derived from proven principles of the Filipino martial arts, they provide a comprehensive curriculum in the use of knives for self-defense and unarmed defenses against edged-weapon attacks. Elements of these systems have been incorporated into the defensive tactics programs of a number of law enforcement and government agencies and have proven viable countless times in actual application. I am also the founder and lead instructor of Damithurt Silat and Sobadiwan Eskrima, systems that address empty-hand self-defense skills and the defensive use of sticks, canes, and other impact weapons.I had the privilege of working with the late Colonel Rex Applegate—close-combat trainer to the Office of Strategic Services (the World War II-era predecessor of the CIA)—and I am one of the only contemporary instructors to have been personally trained by him. I co-authored the book Bullseyes Don’t Shoot Back: The Complete Textbook of Point Shooting for Close Quarters Combat with him and I am regarded as one of the foremost modern authorities on Applegate’s system of handgun point shooting.In 2010, I was inducted into Black Belt magazine’s prestigious Hall of Fame as Weapons Instructor of the Year. That recognition helped drive the development of a worldwide MBC and CBC network. I teach regular seminars and mission-specific courses in my curriculum all over the world and currently have instructor representation in the US, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Japan.
