Michaels's MS research developed a tool to aid surgeons in the inter-operative determination of tumor resection margins. He developed a spectral impedance imaging device capable of distinguishing cancerous from non-cancerous tissues in real-time. He completed spectral characterization of human hepatic tissue with metastatic colorectal tumors from 100 Hz to 1 MHz that resulted in the largest data set of its kind, published in Physiological Measurement and linked. The statistical analysis of spatial errors in margin localization validated his approach, demonstrating accurate margin determination in soft tissues from bio-impedance images.The work products of this research include: 1.) the design and fabrication of an Arduino based 3D CNC probe stage integrated with Gamry impedance analyzer, 2.) a MatLab based image processing software with measurement location registration, 3.) a Monte Carlo Cole-Cole parameter fitting algorithm, 4.) a method and MatLab based algorithm for tissue interface spatial error analysis.In addition, Michael guided his undergraduate mentee, Jacob Mendlovic, in the use of these methodologies for mapping underground root structures, resulting in the Ohio State Student Innovator of Year award.

Worked with a diverse team of doctors, engineers, and scientist to evaluate potential commercialization of experimental medical devices with respect to expected efficacy, market demands, costs, and industrial partnerships.

The creative community I found there was the ideal environment for developing student ideas. The projects varied in scope from community bonding, educational, and innovative. My largest project with ASME was the design and fabrication of an Automated Aquaponics System. With ASME support I established a team. I led that team through a funding proposal that resulted in $3000 of university funding, as well as the design, fabrication, and testing of the system.
