Designing high power electric and hybrid drivetrains for heavy vehicles. Implemented an agile project management cycle to take a prototype research vehicle through to PoC and eventually producing a product that is ready for market.Improved and iterated on the electrical drivetrain and systems for use in heavy construction vehicles. Successfully integrated a market ready diesel generation unit to convert a test vehicle into a hybrid, eliminating customer concerns about range and charging infrastructure. Currently working on a custom high powered diesel-electric generation unit, working from scratch to select, design and integrate electrical and mechanical components.

The course focuses on basic electronics and gives students the base understanding that will carry them through the rest of their degrees. It is where sparks are forged that will hopefully ignite a passion for engineering and electronics. My responsibilities included running seminars and adhoc interactive lessons, setting tutorial questions as well as managing a team of tutors.

Teaching Assistant for Mechatronic Engineering Design - Eee3099S at UCT. This involved assisting with the planning of lectures, labs and administration of the course. Managing the team of tutors. Ad hoc lectures when the class’s knowledge was lacking. Ensuring that everything ran smoothly and the class was happy.

Studying the shelf integrity and safety of the Fimbule Ice Shelf where South Africa offloads all cargo going to its Antarctic base. My work consisted of using Ground Penetrating Radar to study the sub snow structure of the shelf. Find cracks and crevasses and help understand the risks of offloading 20 ton vehicles and containers. My work also included taking many core samples of the ice for mechanical testing to have a geotechnical understanding of the structure and limits of the Antarctic ice shelf.

I was part of a UCT team that is sending an autonomous sensor buoy that is being sent to Antarctica. My job was to set up a database and develop systems to receive and visualise data that would be received via satellite link.A simulation environment was also built as this was developed before the buoy was deployed. The result was a dashboard built in Graphana that was connected to an Influx database which was automatically updated using Node-Red flows.
