Save the Redwoods League is partnering with the Cowell Foundation and the Humboldt County and Del Norte Offices of Education to build place-based curriculum for all students in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Curricular units with culminate with a field trip to one of our local national or state parks.

Humboldt County

The Bigfoot Trail Alliance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is working to support the establishment of the 360 mile route through the Klamath Mountains to celebrate the region's biodiversity. The BFTA fosters a community committed to constructing, maintaining, promoting, and protecting-in perpetuity-the Bigfoot Trail.

Differential Response of Conifers to Drought Across Geographic Gradients - This National Science Foundation Project project will examine how competition, species, and habitat interact to influence conifer tree responses to drought. This research will explore the impacts of drought in order to improve management efforts to mitigate conifer die-back and wildfire risk. Since 2010, over 52 million hectares of trees have died in California's forests due to climate change, drought, and drought-induced disturbances such as wildfire. Forest loss and wildfire trends have important implications for the health, safety, and well-being of communities in both urban and rural areas throughout the American West. The effects of how competition, species, and habitat interact geographically to influence tree responses to drought will be studied across six conifer species. This research will benefit society by providing valuable input data for potential fire risk modeling. The project will also mentor young scientists at an undergraduate institution. It will provide knowledge to land managers and regional tribes through public and educational outreach.

Humboldt County

The Advancing Learning Landscapes (ALL) from the Humboldt County Office of Education will develop and enhance student and teacher understanding of environmental literacy through a deepened connection to their school campus (and eventually beyond) in rural elementary schools across the county. We will use innovative teaching methods to integrate and strengthen place-based science instruction across the curriculum through a program of embedded professional development activities initially based on the campus of county schools. This integration will improve student’s connection to the natural world and in doing so improve their thinking and reasoning skills which will prepare them to successfully meet the performance expectations of the Next Generation Science Standards. The team at the county office will develop and curate curriculum for campuses across the county, coordinate guest scientists visits, and provide training (co-teaching) at school sites with ways to use these resources.

Monitored, mapped, and assessed the health of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) in California in collaboration with the California Native Plant Society and the United States Forest Service.

This journal is sent to CNPS members regularly. Featured articles cover botany, horticulture, vegetation in land management, CNPS projects, and related native plant topics.
