As a Clinical Lab Scientist in this small rural hospital, my responsibilities included:• Opening duties (early shift): Preparing all instruments for the “daily run”. This included maintenance, QC, and daily inventory of reagents (and preparing newreagents when necessary).• My primary responsibilities were in the Core Lab, Blood Bank, and Serology. I also performed PCR using the CEPHEID. • I had limited Micro duties (gram stains, setting up cultures, processing Blood Cultures, “reading” sputum samples).• Maintaining daily QC, and initiating the appropriate corrective action upon QC failure.• Sharing “on-call” duties at night (for the ER).

• As a generalist CLS, my duties were in the Core Lab, Serology (including PCR), and Blood Bank. I was the primary CLS in the Blood Bank. Duties there included TYPE/SCREENS, CROSS-MATCHING, CORD-BLOOD, DAT’s, REAGENT QC, AND ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES (including billing, inventory, ordering supplies, and audits for the Transfusion Committee). We used both gel and tube methods.• I had limited Micro duties (gram stains, setting up cultures, processing Blood Cultures, “reading” sputum samples, and performing PCR).

• As a (Generalist) Clinical Lab Scientist, I worked in the Core Lab and Blood Bank.In Blood Bank we used both tube and gel methods; furthermore, due to the high Volume of OB/GYN screening, we used an automated instrument to perform TYPE/SCREENS.• While Microbiology was a separate department, I did read gram stains and sputums.• Hematology required performing differentials on hematological oncology specimens.
