Department of Transportation representative at the 2018 IGUS meeting in Shanghai, China.• DOT/PHMSA observer for Sandia National Labs' "Crude Oil Volatility Study" and an ad-hoc member of the DOE/DOT /Transport Crude Oil Steering Committee and DOT observer for Jack Rabbit-II Chlorine Release Study.• Contracting Officer Representative on research initiatives involving the energetics of thermites, flammable metal particles, shipping receptacles, Li-batteries, hazardous materials identification, and polymerizing substances.• Technical expert for the development of the North American Emergency Response Guidebook 2016 and 2020 in collaboration with Transport Canada, Mexico, and Argentina. -
Assistant ProfessorMontana Tech Aug 2009 - May 2014• Responsible for the education of undergraduates and graduate students in various areas of chemistry ranging from broad based (general chemistry), expertise specific (inorganic and materials chemistry), and outside formal expertise (biochemistry and organic chemistry). • Establishment of an independent research lab to provide training for young students, establish patentable IP, and broaden the knowledge in my relevant fields of expertise (materials, inorganic, inorganic-organic hybrids, and nano-chemistry). Research focuses included doped ferrites and metal-doped hydroxyapatites colloids.o TEM, SEM, XAS, XMCD, and basic magnetic characterization of the doped ferrites synthesized via surfactant based methods.o Flourescent, magnetic, relaxation, UV-Vis absorption characterization of the metal-doped nanoapatites.• Established a history of applying for and receiving ongoing funding to maintain such laboratory activities and the management (personnel and financial), reporting, and training associated with such activities. Possess extensive experience in technical writing (31 peer reviewed publications, multiple internal grants, progress reports, etc) along with technical presentations via different media (brochures, posters, oral talks, video conferencing, pre-recorded video). • Possess extensive experience in networking with administration, outside federal/state/industrial/private agencies, and the local community. • Have also served on various committees as chair or as an active member responsible for the continual operation of the university (Chair: Instructional Improvement committee and a member of the curriculum review committee). • Student advising. -
Postdoctoral Research AssociateMontana State University Oct 2002 - Jul 2009• Developed one of the first solid-phase methods of generating asymmetric presentation of reactive groups on the solvent-exposed surface of a viral capsid. • Developed a proof-of-concept biomimetic model for the synthesis of L10 CoPt nanoparticles under mild aqueous conditions. • Developed biomimetic methods of synthesizing photoactive materials. • Generated a proof-of-concept synthesis of a photo-reactive iron oxide using previously underutilized proteins extracted from hyperthermophilic archaea. • Acted as a research liaison between multiple departments (plant sciences, chemistry, and physics). • Participated in grant writing, development, and administration. • Developed and promoted new collaborations that opened up unexplored research opportunities. • Established a history of technical writing and strong presentation skills.• Experienced in nanoscale microscopy: TEM, AFM, SEM• Biochemical and Microbiology techniques including genetic manipulation• Beamline experience at NSLS at BNL and ALS at LBNL doing XAS, XMCD, and EXAFS experiments under UHV conditions.• Magnetic property characterization• Nanosynthesis• Langmuir-Blodgett work• Dynamic Light Scattering -
Research AssociateAmeslab Aug 1996 - Oct 2002• Extended the Zintl Ion chemistry into regimes where the delineation between ionic and covalent behavior was blurred. • Acted as an environmental safety officer for a research group in Ameslab (Department of Energy laboratory) where duties included the timely disposal of hazardous waste, purchasing of restricted materials, maintaining training modules, maintained appropriate logs, and ensured compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. • Developed skills in operating in and between different Federal agencies, local academic institutions, and the community to promote and disseminate research findings, transfer of strategic IP, purchasing, and compliance with operating regulations.• Experienced in single crystal and powder diffraction techniques, electronic property measurements, band structure calculations, handling of air/moisture sensitive materials, Schlenk line techniques, and glovebox techniques.
