Wrote and maintained SOP’s, job process sheets and other safety documentation.Coordinated and supervised installation of ThermoMagnetic Processing System (TMPS)
Energy Coupled To Matter Ceramics Scientist
Established, integrated and developed key components of Energy Coupled to Matter (ECM) laboratory to support ECM Key Campaign Initiative (KCI), a program designed to explore and exploit field-matter interactions in the field as well as in the processing environment.Applied expertise in solid state physics to guide alternative processing methods (spark plasma sintering [SPS], flash sintering, single mode microwave (SMMW), magnetic field processing etc.) to Army relevant materials such as B4C, TiB2 SiC and blended mixtures.Electromagnetically characterized samples using AC and DC magnetization, resistivity, impedance spectroscopy and other such techniques to determine baseline properties, potential coupling mechanisms and post processing enhancements. Expanded and maintained energy coupled to matter (ECM) laboratory equipment and supplies. Wrote and maintained standard operating procedures (SOPs) and related documentation in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.Procured, managed and maintained a High Energy Laser (HEL) system as part of a directed energy (DE) research system conforming to current and future requirements. Designed experiments and analyzed experimental results integrating lab equipment and diagnostics tools with the aid of Matlab, Origin, Labview and other related software.Supervised, reviewed and guided equipment specifications and contract terms related to the procurement and installation of the ThermoMagnetic Processing System (TMPS): a unique processing system that combines the ability to apply a 9 Tesla magnetic field over a large volume that can be simultaneously heated to 2000 °C under an applied load of 2200 psi.Analyzed the utility of state of the art physics based models, including ALEGRA and COMSOL, as related to ECM and DE. Participated in 6.1 and 6.2 research proposal cycles designed to exploit novel designs and fabrication methods.
Research Physicist
Designed, developed and tested armor systems and armor components including metals, ceramics, ceramic composites and encapsulated ceramics using kinetic energy projectiles, explosively formed penetrators and blast. Coordinated and planned experimental test programs designed to provide insight, and understanding of the fundamental physics that governs target-penetrator interactions such as localization, interface defeat, impedance mismatch and subsurface dwell.Applied computational tools and experimental techniques such as flash x-ray imaging, high speed photography and photon doppler velocimetry to experiment and results, quantifying armor performance trends and identifying high potential approaches.Guided and assisted other branches/external organizations efforts in support of mutual mission goals.
Research Physicist
Planned, fabricated and performed experiments designed to understand the fundamental interactions and mechanisms that govern target-penetrator interactions. Tested armor coupons and components representing current and future vehicle armor systems, providing feedback and guidance related to development and direction of programs.Applied understanding of principles of structural mechanics and impact physics to the results of experimental testing to validate and verify analytical and computational models such as CTH, ALEGRA and EPIC, subsequently using these hydrocodes to guide and plan future tests and experimentation. Developed and integrated new armor protection technologies into proposed army systems.Summarized test results, prepared and presented results of experiments and programs to ARL staff and other approved institutions such as the Warheads and Ballistics Classified Symposium, Southwest Research Institute, and other authorized private corporations, laboratories and personnel.Mentored and guided research activities of summer interns.
