In my time in DBB I have sailed with the jack-up vessel Wind for 2 years. I started as 1. Engineer but was after 6 months offered the position as chief engineer. By that time the ship was ongoing a major overhaul at a Danish shipyard and also changing class from Lloyds register to DNV. For most of the 3 months at the yard the captain and I was the only officers onboard so it was a quit stressful time. I later trained 6 engineers in the jacking system and was also heavily involved in planning the next major overhaul and rebuilding of the ship The jacking system was at electro-hydraulic system designed by MSC in Holland. The system consisted of two rings; an upper and a lower. The upper ring was fixed and the lower ring was movable and pushed the leg up or down. When the lower ring was in either all the way up or down, the upper ring was engaged so that the lower ring was able to be returned to the starting position. The system was operated in a semi-automatic mode from the bridge and worked ok but slow. The previous owner of the ship has not maintained the ship or the systems onboard very well, so a lot of time and effort was spend correcting years of bad maintenance and pour designs. Most of the work regarding the hydraulic systems was done by a subcontractor. I was also involved in redesigning the jacking procedure for operating in special areas such as soft sea beds or strong current etc. The ship was fitted with footplates during the first stay at shipyard but nobody was sure how they would work in extreme conditions. For most of the sites there was a lot improvement to be seen especially regarding penetration. But it took a lot of careful testing before everybody was convinced that we in fact were able to work were we before the footplates were installed could not.
