A company I set up with a partner to do corporate training. Was rather successful for a while but then we decided to close it after another two companies we had were becoming way more successful than this training company.

A friend I have known for more than 10 years asked me to join his company for a while as he was diagnosed with lung cancer. It was a request I could not refuse. I was supposed to just help him establish the company and stabilise it until his family could take over from him. Unfortunately, he passed away just as the company was becoming more stable. Didn't stay in the company after his death as the family felt they are ready and I wanted to focus on my own career.

Got knocked around in the corporate world. One of the lowest moments in my life. Was directionless, discouraged, distracted, and truly "disabled." Realised painfully that I would never be able to amount to much if I stayed as an employee of any organisation. What I wanted was way too much higher than what could be given.The positive outcome of this low period is that it has made me who I am today, a "victor by circumstances." A sole-proprietorship I set up to work with other youth counsellors as my associates. At one time I had 75 youths I had to meet once per month and it was killing me. Hence, I wanted to reduce my caseload by passing them to other counsellors but the youth's parents insisted on me, thinking my disabilities somehow made me a better role model (which is rather silly). My income was good but not good enough due to my humungous medical needs. We are selling our opinions, trying to gain influence, coordinating teamwork or simply managing a conversation. One of the best parts of telemarketing, I learned how to take rejections, that when people reject my preposition, they are simply rejecting an idea and not rejecting me as a person or my personality.I was selling Kirby vacuum cleaners initially and then moved on to cable TV subscriptions, making appointments for financial advisors, event tickets, NTUC and all kinds of memberships, etc. It was the foundation I needed as it taught me how to handle objections and rejections, present proposals, articulate my speech, direct conversations, plan communications, etc. So, I pretty much had a great time working part-time while pursuing further studies.
