Epping To Thornleigh Alliance

The Epping to Thornleigh Third Track (ETTT) project is a key component of the NSFC program of works. The primary operational objectives of the ETTT project are to provide additional northbound paths for freight trains, reduce waiting times for freight trains and increase the reliability of both freight and passenger services.Construction by an Alliance will commence in mid-2013 and is due for completion by mid-2016. As the Project Safety Manager, I cover both WHS and Rail Safety, some of my responsibilities are:1. Project S&H Performance & Leadership - Ensure the ETTT Management System are fully utilised on the ETTT Project. Develop and implement a program of risk based inspections and observations 2. S&H training and competency Ensure a training needs analysis and training matrix is developed and maintained for the ETTT. 3. Planning and Project Resources for S&H - Develop, implement and maintain a project specific Project Safety Management Plan and suite of hazard control procedures. 4. Managing Subcontractors and Suppliers & Procurement -  Develop, implement and maintain subcontractor management procedures for the ETTT Project. 5. Manage S&H Risks and SHEWMS - Actively participate in risk workshops to identify safety risks and guide the formulation of ‘above the line’ treatment plans.6. Investigate Incidents and Emergencies and develope systemic fixes to ensure the same incidents do not re-occur. 7. S&H Consultation - Ensure that there are systems in place to promote adequate consultation with the workforce and sub-contractors in relation to Safety and Health matters 8. Unsafe work & Non-compliance - Implement a system to guide the management of risk when responding to unsafe work conditions and unplanned changes to the task or work environment coordination9. Oversee a team who deal with every aspect of Rail safeworking to ensure compliance to the Network rules and Procedures while working inside the Rail corridor. 

Southern Sydney Freight Line Alliance

As Safety Manager I was resposible to drive a culture of “Safety and Health Above All Else” and ensure compliance with all Alliance SH&E policies, procedures and worksite rules to prevent accidents. I was also responsible for accurate, timely and responsive safety, health and rail safety services, ensuring safety standards and compliance and ensuring continuous improvement in safety statistics on site. In this role I led by example and supported the workforce in reporting any injury, incident or “near miss” encountered during the course of work by creating a safety culture within the Alliance including the development of safety initiatives and activities to raise awareness.Accomplishments:To date the project has sustained a safety record of zero LTIs for 559,003 man hours worked and Alliance stakeholders have expressed their satisfaction with the safety outcomes on site so far.

Kingsgrove To Revesby Quadruplification

As the Safety, EGP and Utilities Manager on the project my responsibilities included developing the EGP management plan in conjunction with the pipeline owner, maintainer company and the client to a high standard and creating a training program for ‘working in and around underground and overhead utilities’. I oversaw service and utility relocations, interfaced with service providers, oversaw the safety, health and environment management systems, carried out safety audits and incident investigations, ensured staff were correctly inducted, involved in toolbox talks and were following SWMS and ensured DBYD practices were followed. I also developed working procedures to allow safe excavation in the vicinity of all underground utilities and developed a strong working relationship with all the utilities and service providers on the works.Accomplishments:There was good compliance with all Alliance Safety and Health policies and procedures on the project during my time as Safety, EGP and Utilities Manager. Best practice strategies and tools were in place and accurate and timely reports were produced. Even though there were some safety issues the project still received a ‘good’ safety rating from TfNSW in the April 2012 Contractor Performance Report with KRA and KPI requirements achieved in conjunction with the wider team. All utilities and services were safely relocated and service providers kept well informed.

North West Transit Way

As a Senior Project Engineer on this project I oversaw a team of site engineers and subcontractors. It was on this project that I managed the design and construction interfaces on two bridges and began to recognise the number of potential safety issues associated with these structures. In my role my key tasks included tendering out and selecting appropriate third parties to conduct formwork, reinforcement, concrete pump and place and structural steel components. As a part of my role this also included ensuring that subcontractors abided by Leighton Contractors safety management systems and detailed weekly project reports to the Zone Manager including any reportable near misses, accidents or safety concerns.

Waste Recycling Group East Schemes

Working for client Waste Recycling Group within a newly awarded partnering contract. The contract was to run for a duration of five years delivering a varied number of schemes ranging in value from £100k to £1m. The scope of works included the capping of completed landfill cells, the extending of side linings to existing cells to increase their capacity and the construction of new cells, which involves bulk earthworks. My role involves reporting directly to the construction manager, the over seeing of all the construction works on the sites, preparing target costs for the schemes, preparation of health and safety plans, preparing the resourced programme of works and sourcing plant and labour.Key outcomes/accomplishments:•Played a key role in succeeding to establish a very good partnering/working relationship with the client. The successes of this partnering contract lead to the securing of the partnering contract with WRG West.•Completed contracts which were defect free due to the preparation of detailed method statements, supervision of sub contractors and supervision of all site works. •Prepared weekly cost reports in order to track the costs/outputs of the site works. This allowed the monthly cost to complete to be accurate and detailed

Site manager for JN Bentley, responsible for delivering various projects in partnering framework contracts. Typical scope of works included; design and construct of circa 30 wastewater treatment schemes; and earthworks and structures for liquid treatment works at landfill sites.Key outcomes/accomplishments:- Providing technical solutions through the Value engineering process. - Forging strong relationships with clients for positive project outcomes in time and cost resulting in repeat work with the same clients.- Award winning solution for engagement of community in innovative technical solution for a wastewater scheme in a tourist town.

Environment Agency Flood Alleviaton Schemes

Working with a civil contractor – Edmund Nuttall UK - responsible for management of junior staff and site supervision of directly employed labour and sub contractors on Environment Agency projects.Scope included; the construction of river defences using reinforced concrete walls, sheet-piled walls and earth embankment solutions in existing rivers

M621/M1 Link Road And Hebden Road Viaduct

Site Engineer responsible for reinforced structures including a viaduct, retaining walls, water retaining structures. This was achieved through various solutions including which included piled diaphragm walls, a reinforced concrete deck, masonry walls, road works and a Gabion wall.
