My eight years of experience as a frontline personal lines broker in Ontario has been a rewarding one.In my eight years working with both the public and insurers you appreciate how your position is as a advisor and problem solver. Your clients have insurance needs, you responsibility as a broker is to work with your client to understand those needs and arrange coverage to satisfy those requirements. Having good relations with your insurance carriers help you achieve your client's insurance requirements.As someone who is now moving into the commercial realm of insurance for new people getting into the industry these are my experiences and hope they help you.-Know how to communicate and document, for every win you will have to be the bearer of bad news. Some claims are just not covered, some premiums are just not affordable, some coverages are not available. Be able to communicate that and document that conversation with the client. -Know how to work the insurance portals, its a technical skill that you gotta know. If it takes you three hours to upload a new automobile policy that is time you are not servicing the clients. As a broker you want to be as personal as a broker allows but as efficient and timely as a callcentre wants to be. Gain expertise in those insurance portals and you can find your manuals, your wordings, your midterm quotes on the fly. This industry is speeding up and your modern broker needs to be in step. -Be a team player, insurance is complicated, work with your colleges, use their experiences, getting a second opinion on a complicated file can be a huge boon. As one of the most experienced staff in the office new and old staff alike come for advice, second opinions, or training. Be that helping hand, yes you have your own work but help out your coworker. You were in their shoes once and if they are coming to you for assistance that means they value your experience and insight.
