Served one year on a Medium Endurance Cutter.(CGC HARRIET LANE) and four years of service on a 175ft Coast Guard Buoy Tender.(CGC MARIA BRAY).Duties onboard CGC MARIA BRAY included all of the following. Prepared and presented navigation briefs to command and crew. Assisted in underway trip planning, required arranging berthing, putting track lines on paper charts and transferring them to electronic charting systems. Compiled servicing information verifying position using DGPS, and verifying lighting characteristics and mooring information; Watch standing duties included standing watch as helmsman, lookout, bos'n of the watch, quartermaster/junior officer of the deck. Assisted in training lookouts and helmsman and assisting in ships navigation and maneuvering situations. As a buoy deck supervisor, duties onboard included directing deck riggers in rigging and lifting buoys onboard to perform routine maintenance on aids to navigation, checking mooring chain and lighting equipment. Served as line handling supervisor to the forecastle and fantail, relaying line commands to line handlers during mooring, and warping evolutions. Conducted small boat operations on the boat deck as rigger and as supervisor. Supervisor duties included relaying hand signals to the davit operator and radio communication with the bridge.Conducted preventive maintenance on all deck equipment, including wire rope splicing and lubrication and ship maintenance including prepping, priming and painting on all interior and exterior structures and fittings. Performed inspection and maintenance on all rescue and survival gear including type one, three and four PFD's, immersion suits and stokes litter.
