About Michael Latham

A cross disciplined, proactive engineer with a bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's in Bioengineering with a published thesis on hydrophilic polymeric adhesives. While earning my degrees at the University of Kansas I was involved in multiple groups such as the Institute for Bioengineering Research performing research and product development on biomaterials and medical devices while utilizing skills such as root cause analysis, experimental design, and creating procedures while working independently and in teams. I also paid for my schooling by teaching biology, physics, biomechanics, and coding to graduate students. In 2021, I was contracted to Smith and Nephew to perform an in depth root cause analysis and implement improvements and standardization for the laser marking operation for bone trauma plate production which was causing a build up of over $825,000 worth of product at the operation. Improvement and standardization of hardware, software, fixturing, data collection, and programming methodology reduced daily errors by 97%. I was then brought on under a full time position currently leading LEAN and Six Sigma initiatives in the manufacturing process.Specialties: Leadership, Collaboration, Cross-discipline Research and Analysis, Experimental Design, Statistical Data Analysis, Teaching, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomaterials, Root Cause Analysis, Standard Operating Procedure Creation, Lean and Six Sigma methods, able to work independently and in teams .

  • Smith & Nephew
    Manufacturing Engineer 1
    Smith & Nephew Aug 2022 - Jun 2023
    Watford, Hertfordshire, Gb
o Led LEAN and Six Sigma initiative to standardize production of Periprosthetic, EVOS large frag trauma bone plate production Led team to standardize production of large frag trauma bone plate production expanding machine capacity utilization from 16k parts per year to potentially 29k parts per year Worked with planning department to modify how mixes per period are planned Currently 3 months ahead of schedule
  • Smith & Nephew
    Contractor Manufacturing Engineer 1
    Smith & Nephew Aug 2021 - Aug 2022
    Watford, Hertfordshire, Gb
o Led Laser Process Improvement Project for Laser Marking Operation Laser marking operation for 1500+ catalog numbers of trauma bone plates handling 16k trauma plates per year showed poor productivity due to multiple sources of issues across hardware, software, fixturing, and programming resulting in daily counts of orders on the laser problem rack reaching on average 86 orders ($825,600.00 in product). Efforts to improve and standardize the operation led to daily counts dropping to on average under 3 new orders per day on the laser problem rack. Production utilized multiple types of lasers with 80% of all lasers showing issues related to hardware. All lasers underwent root cause analysis to determine hardware issues then repaired, converted to standardized hardware, and calibrated resulting in consistent output and no hardware related issues appearing for over a year Worked with FOBA software engineers to design custom, networked software to replace outdated systems allowing for high level tracking for quality control and greater consistency of laser marking across all lasers via program management through standard WIP Lack of standardized processes led to the development of 47+ fixture sets being used in the laser marking operation with varying designs, sizes, and material types. Through standardization of programming and processes total fixture count was reduced to 4 sets lowering incorrect laser marking occurrences and reducing yearly crashes from 9 to 0 Updated program validation process to reduce lead time by 1 week while improving transparency and documentation with the quality team Created and documented via work instructions standardized processes for laser program creation and calibration allowing for easy and consistent training of laser program creation and the implementation of laser technicians into the production processo Validated new A51nx Makino Horizontal Mills for Production Completed 1 month ahead of schedule
