About Michael Lau

On a mission to help people feel seen in a digitally connected, but increasingly lonely world.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you want to get to know me:When I was a college student at USC, I helped grow highkey (an app to help students share and find parties) into the biggest app on campus as the sole marketer on a team of 3. I had no idea what I was doing. But somehow, Highkey peaked at 50% campus penetration with over 10,000 users and changed what weekends looked like, bringing people together that otherwise would have never caught the invite.What inspired me about the experience was how much people craved and appreciated a sense of belonging.This sparked an interest in brand as a tool for creating belonging, beyond just selling products. I joined and eventually led the Creative Strategy department of the 83-person student agency at USC, where I found my own home on campus. And I explored this interest through a series of internships, at places like Variety (the leading entertainment publication) and Anomaly (AdWeek 2022 U.S. Agency of the Year). When I found myself unexpectedly back in my hometown during the pandemic, I teamed up with my beekeeper best friend to launch our own business and brand: Jive Honey. We didn't make a million dollars but we made it to the cover of our local newspaper; and we brought "A Dose of Happy" to people who really needed it in a dark time—ourselves included. These experiences have now led me to New York, where I'm an Associate at Prophet—the global consulting firm most famous for being founded by Scott Galloway and being Vice Chaired by David Aaker, who many call the "Father of Modern Branding". At Prophet, I not only get to work on Brand Strategy, but I'm also learning to think strategically from many perspectives about how a company can grow and transform their business: Product and Innovation, Organization and Culture, Marketing and Sales.Ultimately I'm using everything I learn to realize my mission. I'm worried about how lonely many of us feel in the current culture, and I know the way forward is to bring it back to what we've always done as human beings.Right now that looks like building a tool that can help us nurture and grow our friendships, and sharing a story from a stranger I meet everyday @y.areyouhere on Instagram.
