While studying for my PhD at the University of Wyoming I did a field-based project in the Bighorn Basin. The mammal fossils of the Fort Union Formation in the southwestern part of the basin had not been studied in any detail; I discovered the sequence of fossil mammals well enough to create a biostratigraphic zonation. In addition, the sparsely fossiliferous nature of the rock led me to study how depositional settings controlled fossil preservation.During academic year 1990-1991 I accepted a Fulbright Fellowship to study at the University of Bonn in Germany. There I joined the research team lead by Dr. Prof. Wighard von Koenigswald and contributed to the study of mammalian tooth enamel microstructure.

Corpus Christi, Texas Area

At Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi I taught structural geology and a new course called "The origin of fossils." Both of these courses gave me opportunities to develop a teaching style involving field data collection.

My master's work at UN-L involved studying the mammalian biostratigraphy of the Ash Hollow Formation on the north shore of Lake McConaughy in western Nebraska.
