While we were working together Michael developed a BKM for matching CD-SEM tools which is required to keep a litho and etch line working correctly in a fab. Writing the BKM was no little feat. A new BKM was needed since we were working with a new generation of CD-SEM tools and semiconductor devices at the same time. The specifications tightened which naturally required the development of new approaches and methodologies. Michael helped to find a way to apply the new requirements to the new hardware. He did that by spending time with the scientists who designed the tool components, spending time with the field experts, learning their work practice, and spending time with the mathematicians to understand how the calibration algorithms worked. He was able to talk the same language with the different, internationally matrixed groups, and earn their respect. In the end, under Michael's leadership the product group was able to put together a comprehensive package that included: new documentation, SW client applications, calculators, and tool calibration methodologies to aid field technical experts. This was adopted company-wide and then Michael went to the field to teach the method. I have not come across another engineer at AMAT who had such passion and commitment for his projects. Michael is an exceptional engineer and project manager.
