From August 2016 I worked as part of the Microsoft News engineering team in Dublin. This involved building tools and backend services for both our internal editorial users as well as our external partners who provide Microsoft with the news content.Tools were Single Page Applications written in Typescript and using React/Redux. Backend services were written in C# and .Net, and were commonly written as Service Fabric microservices.

From October 2007 to August 2016 I worked as part of a Dublin based development team on different releases of Windows.Windows 10: Maps App development team- Designed and developed features for the Maps app that shipped with Windows 10, including guided transport journey. The Maps app is developed using C# and XAML on the Universal Windows Platform. Used agile methodologies with daily stand-ups, short sprints, GIT for source control and Visual Studio Online for bug and task management.- Helped to improve app reliability by individual bug investigation and resolution, as well as by analysing root causes, identifying common mistakes and coding patterns that contributed to bugs, documenting these findings and disseminating this information to the team.- Championed app accessibility for users with disabilities through scenario testing, bug filing and verification, identifying problem areas and recommending solutions.Windows 8 and 8.1: Touch Keyboard Input team- Designed and developed features for touch keyboard, including text prediction and auto-correction.- Developed a new architecture for IME input for East Asian languages, together with colleagues in the US and in Asia, and developed the UI for this feature as part of the Dublin team. - These features were all developed using C++ on Win32 and COM.- Overcame challenging Windows legacy issues in the development of these input features and documented these issues which influenced future developmentWindows 7: Windows International team- Developed Additional Clocks UI and a Timezone API to make using the time zone information stored in the Windows registry easier for developers.

Led a team of development test engineers working on the establishment of a certification program for vendor developed smart cards and their associated software modules, thus allowing vendors to get a ‘Designed for Windows’ logo for their products.Successfully rolled out this program as the first ‘User Mode Driver’ program delivered as part of the Windows Driver Development Kit.

Managed the day to day activities of the Dublin development centre within Cybertrust, which consisted of 26 people, including software engineers, quality assurance engineers and technical writers.Managed the development of UniCERT Public Key Infrastructure Certificate Management System (CMS), which managed the lifecycle of digital certificates, on Windows and Solaris platforms, using C++ and some Java.Managed the KeyTools development toolkit used to build or PKI-enable applications, typically in conjunction with UniCERT. The toolkit was developed on Windows, Solaris, HP-UX and Linux using C++ and Java.Planned and managed product releases.Introduced and monitored process initiatives.Liaised with the global support team to prioritise and plan patch releases.Performed annual staff reviews.

Dublin

Contributed to the architecture, specification, design and implementation of the Slingshot product suite, with particular responsibility for server components. Slingshot was a scalable real-time client/server system for distribution of real-time financial information across the internet, designed to run across low bandwidth/high latency networks. Prior to working on the Slingshot product, I managed and provided technical leadership on a project where we delivered cross-platform client-server applications providing real-time Money Market calculations and in-house rate distribution to a major English bank. I owned the architecture, design and development of the system, leading a team of 8 people on this multi-year project.

Ireland

Developed real-time messaging software for the MAR-30 product, a rural telecommunications system. All development was done in C, either on Sun SPARC stations or PCs, and was cross compiled for a 68000 microprocessor running a pSOS kernel.

Developed core products such as OPEN/Image UNIX and Wang Office working closely with groups in the US. All development was in C using X and OSF/Motif.
