Responsible for development and operation of the Nielsen Data Science Institute, a global center of innovation and research including the Nielsen Fellows; external research collaborations with universities, industry organizations, and other researchers; fostering active dissemination of research results through conference presentations and scientific publications; and development and delivery of global leadership programs, including Global Data Science Leadership Program, TechX (developing subject matter experts), and the Emerging Leaders Program. Also responsible for oversight of the Global Research & Development Team and the Singapore Innovation Hub, a collaborative effort between Nielsen and the Singapore Economic Development Board to develop innovative measurement strategies using organic/big data and machine-learning techniques, global segmentation methods, and data collection approaches for use in emerging economies.

Responsible for leading research and development efforts to enhance the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) with respect to survey methodology, research design, and information management. The BRFSS is a nationwide, State-based health surveillance system, using a random digit dial telephone survey design to collect information from more than 300,000 adults annually. Serves as lead technical expert in the design, conduct, and analysis for methodological studies related to the BRFSS, including techniques for improving survey participation and data quality (use of advance letters, impact of call screening technologies, effect of Do Not Call registries), methodological issues involving use of multiple modes in data collection (web, mail, and CATI), obtaining participation from hard-to-survey populations (linguistically isolated, racial and ethnic groups), and specific state-based problems related to survey operations. Designs and directs special survey projects, including rapid response surveillance (2004-05 influenza vaccination monitoring) and follow-up panel surveys (adult and childhood asthma follow-up).

Directed data collection activities for large-scale surveys, with expertise in computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI), internet, interactive voice response, and mixed-mode data collection, including study design and implementation, staff, budget, and schedule management. Primary project responsibilities included managing the web and telephone data collection activities of the National Study of Faculty and Students, including oversight of a $4.5M data collection and training budget, seven direct technical reports, and more than 400 telephone and internet research supervisors, quality control specialists and interviewers. Design and implement methodological experiments, including techniques for improving response rates, methodological issues involving use of multiple modes in data collection (web, CATI, IVR, mail, and field), utility of technology-based training (virtual responsive human technologies), and attributes of successful interviewers (examining interviewer longevity and success on the job). Serve as a senior scientific adviser for methodological issues and operational best practices.
