About Michael M.
A Melbourne based back-end engineer turned front-end and performance engineer with over a decade in the industry. In that time I’ve written production code in Java, PHP, Ruby, Golang, JavaScript, and Sass/CSS for some of Australia’s biggest start-ups.In 2013 I had the privilege of launching the Australia chapter of CSSConf with some great friends. In the subsequent years I launched MelbCSS with Jordan Lewis, the 2015 and 2016 editions of CSSConf, and 2016 reboot of JSConf AU! Additionally I’ve spoken at CSSConf US, CSSConf EU, CSSConf Asia, and Web Directions Respond on a range of topics. And sometimes I write about web performance.I’m an active open source software supporter and contributor, maintaining LibSass and Node Sass since late 2014. As of June 2017 Node Sass has 4.5M monthly installs.
Listed skills include Javascript, Jquery, Css, Sass, and 29 others.

Principal Platform Engineer
Senior Developer Platforms Engineer
Technical lead on cross-cutting initiatives to extract core capabilities from the Ruby on Rails monolith into edge infrastructure and 12 factor microservices including authentication, experiment enrollment, feature flagging, and edge routing. These capabilities were delivered through a mix of technologies including AWS Cognito, AWS Kinesis, AWS Fargate, Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, Cloudflare Workers, HAProxy, Golang, and Node.js. Through these efforts we also advocated and led adoption efforts to migrate our aging observability platform to Datadog which offered significant benefits in our distributed architecture. In parallel we lead the migration of the core product model from being coupled to the Ruby on Rails monolith at runtime to a static distributable configuration available at build and deploy time without direct access to the monolith. These initiatives span from weeks to years with emphasis delivering value early, improved developer experience and efficiency, resilience, data sovereignty, and observability. The core platforms team focus on mentorship, education, and advocacy made it a natural environment for embarking on the transition to senior engineer.
Senior Front-End Platforms Engineer
Technical lead on the development of our in-house front-end framework with a strong focus on first-class support for server side rendered React, GraphQL, i18n, observability, and developer experience. The framework deployed with out of the box integration with our in-house Kubernetes cluster, authentication, and UI component framework, The framework was deployed on the latest Node.js LTS, and scaled through a combination of kubernetes and HAProxy. As Redbubble was still primarily a Ruby on Rail environment, thoughtful and compassionate mentorship with even the most senior team members was key to the acceptance of this new technological direction and building sufficient comfort for external advocacy. This front-end framework became the standard for all new front-end experience projects. The challenges encountered throughout its development lead to the creation of two new platform teams in its place - design systems, and core platforms.
Performance Engineer
Currently I’m a Performance Engineer on the platform services team. The scope of our projects require regular contributions to our Symfony 2 (PHP), Rails (Ruby), and Golang production code bases. The team primarily builds Golang micro-services with React front-ends for:- user authentication and management- double-entry accounting ledger- performant image delivery- internal admin systems- A/B testing- public traffic service-meshAdditionally I worked with teams on migrations to:- HTTPS-only- CDNs- a service-meshIn my role as Performance Engineer I worked on- increasing visibility of user-centric performance metric- http/2 adoption- WebP image adoption
Front-End Engineer
As a front-end focused engineer I collaborated closely with the UX, design teams, and product teams on - initial internationalisation- initial responsive redesign- subsequent rebrands- componentisation of the UIIn leading efforts to modernise our front-end I worked on- Sass based CSS UI component framework- high risk JavaScript UI framework major version updates- migrations between generations of UI frameworks including Backbone.js, jQuery, FlightJS, and React.- modernising our front-end build infrastructure with performance and developer experience in mind- technological explorations into http/2, GraphQL, and Relay
Php Developer
As a product developer in our PHP stack I worked on teams responsible for- core product experiences- primary conversion funnel- payments and fraud- growth and acquisition- real time UI and email notifications
Lead Developer
I started as a full stack developer on the company’s in house PHP CMS product. The role required me to work closely with our designers, and interpret client requirements for sites ranging from e-commerce, portfolios, and government.Later in my tenure I lead the small development team in building stand-alone micro sites for e-commerce, and government clients using the PHP Silex framework. In this role I worked directly with clients to gather requirements.
Software Developer
Worked on a CRM specific to real estate agents. The team was very small which afforded me the freedom to take initiative in improving developer efficiency and reducing bugs includingAdopting the project’s first ORM to enable encapsulated, and database queries- adopting OOP to enable encapsulated, and testable code- adopting jQuery to lower instances of cross browser bugs- implementing a shared asset solution with manifests resulting faster deployments, and cache performance
