In my current role as a research development technician, I am responsible for the day to day operation of the test labs at the Livingston site. This includes: coordination of test equipment calibration and maintenance, creating and reviewing QHS&E documentation (work instructions, risk assessments and COSHH assessments). In addition, I also support the material scientists and engineers with the logistics, testing and analysis of field trial garments. Thus ensuring the timely delivery of research projects that drive business and technical decision making within the Fabrics division.

As a technician within the materials and residual stress group my role was to operate the mechanical test equipment whilst ensuring the equipment was maintained and calibrated as necessary. My duties included: conducting ambient and elevated tension and compression tests on behalf of AFRC research staff and students; coordinating maintenance and calibration of test machines; generating and maintaining lab QHS&E documentation and procedures.

Inchinnan

My role as a laboratory technician with Intertek was primarily to support the activities of the metallurgists located within the compressor facility at Rolls Royce, Inchinnan. My duties included: the preparation and etching of metallographic samples sectioned from complex turbine component forgings and castings; hardness testing of samples taken from production line forgings; assessing metallographic samples for forging defects and grain size.

Renfrew

Involved in testing of materials and weldments that were being developed for future use in boiler and steam pipework fabrication. The role involved delivering accurate test data and reports to the materials engineers leading individual projects. I was also responsible for the maintenance and calibration of the equipment within the laboratory. I would also assist the materials engineers with post test assessment of specimens, hardness testing and sample photography.
