I have been self-employed the majority of my post-university career. Starting out as a carpenter, I eventually had my own remodel business in Austin, TX. I moved to Dallas, TX and continued building luxury homes until I discovered a world of toys from Japan that rarely came to the U.S. in early 1980s. I opened ModernToys in Dallas in 1985, the first toy store in the U.S. featuring exclusively Japanese toys only meant for the Japanese domestic market. These included tin robots, Godzilla & Co., and many of the robots later introduced to the U.S. through Power Rangers. The store was invited to become a part of the family of stores at Dallas's prestigious NorthPark Center. While owning and operating that store, the owner of NorthPark asked me to come up with another retail concept to fill a vacant space. That resulted in a luxury western home furnishings and apparel store called The Last Buckaroo. I operated both stores in NorthPark into the 1990s. For a brief period in the mid 1990s, I was a buyer for national rock and roll catalog called VROOM. I worked with Sony Signatures (The Beatles, KISS, and others), as well as Grateful Dead Productions and other artists to produce licensed merchandise for fans. After leaving the catalog, I created my own eBay business selling thousands of rock n' roll memorabilia, beginning in the early days of eBay in 1999 and continuing to this day.In 2008, I joined my father, John B. Malouf, in helping with the future direction of his men's and women's fine apparel business, founded in 1949. Malouf's, starting in Lubbock, TX, has become a nationally recognized family-owned store featuring the finest in men's and women's apparel, and includes David Yurman jewelery. I am currently President and owner of Malouf's, with two locations: Lubbock, TX and Southlake, TX.
