Over time dispatchers engage in high stress situations, manage multiple incidents, and maintain proper procedures. Dispatchers truly serve as a vital link between the caller requesting help and first responders providing aid. They are the first point of contact prior to any emergency response effort. Trained telecommunicators provide cpr instructions, find you when you're lost, and gather crucial information for first responders.Over the years I had the unique opportunity to train many dispatchers. While at Mountain Valley Emergency Communications Center, I established myself as a training expert and role model for my agency. When there was a dispatcher in need I would always find a way to help. I believe my core values positioned me as the trainer my agency needed. Core values such as telling the truth, taking accountability, and being authentic. Those values in action helped me be creative, find training solutions, and model expectations. It was these attributes and my perseverance that allowed me to be a successful training leader. In addition, my skills and calm personality shaped me into an excellent dispatch supervisor. I realized that leading can be difficult. There is no right way to lead but I've certainly experienced the wrong way. Following my set core values I believe in, "doing the right thing" when it comes to decision making. Over time I understood that being a positive role model, letting others participate in important decisions, creating a sense of fairness, and helping people succeed created an overall sense of satisfaction. I am very proud of the work I've done over the years but the journey is far from over.
