In this course, we did classwork such as learning the 10-codes, phonetic alphabet, penal codes, etc. We also did simulations of police work such as traffic stops, clearing rooms, handcuffing, physical agility, etc.I took part in the Student's Police Academy at California State University, Stanislaus (CSUS). This program is not truly an academy, however, I have further gained knowledge and insight from active police officers teaching this course. In this course, I learned more about topics such as traffic radar, use of force, and DUI investigations.I have taken part in two ride-alongs at the Oakland Police Department (OPD). Participating in these two ride-alongs, I got to experience firsthand what police officers actually do while on duty. I learned that a police officer does not respond to as many calls in a shift as I had previously thought. Report writing and many calls for service take up quite a bit of time. I also observed and learned what to do during certain situations and while there is downtime. After participating in these two ride-alongs, I can say that a career in law enforcement is definitely something that excites me and is for me.
