My position of CADD Technician at UC Synergetic involved numerous responsibilities. As a designer of AT&T's Light Gig Distribution projects, the main goal of my job was to find the most cost effective way to distribute fiber optic service for a given land area. Due to the nature of fiber optics and how fiber cables are manufactured, the cables for each project had to be custom made with terminals for buildings at custom locations. So length and accuracy of placement is absolutely imperative to a successful project. I have a number of different designs located in different states. Each state operates under its own set of design standards, DOT rules, right of way encroachment, aerial and buried environment specifications, and drafting formats. Keeping up with different requirements of each state we operated in, along with AT&T's own changing regulations was also a major priority of my work. I was proficient enough in my designs that I was asked to mentor new designers and assist them with their jobs in addition to accomplishing my own individual projects. As the designer positions were filled, the company had a shortage of fielders to go out and measure all of the necessary utility pole routes and optimal areas for burying cable. I volunteered and I worked in a flex position where I would design smaller, local jobs, and do all of fielding for the local design team. Also when necessary I would go out to other states to field large Light Gig jobs.
