At OSU, Mr. Murphy has worked on numerous research projects. The first project is an analysis of pre and post-intervention survey data collected as part of Project ReFresh and examines associations among perceptions of peer fruit and vegetable consumption (FV), self-efficacy, and individual FV consumption to identify intervention strategies for increasing children’s FV consumption. While independent effects of perceptions of peers and self-efficacy did not significantly increase fruit and vegetable consumption, a cumulative effect of multiple intervention strategies may exist. These findings provide important information for public health practitioners and establish an impetus to further the understanding of the effective and efficient combination of behavior change strategies that may provide a pragmatic framework for program planning. Mr. Murphy has worked with Dr. Grutzmacher and a colleague to draft a manuscript for this project with a targeted submission date of August 2020. The second project is a secondary data analysis of responses from the National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH) examining associations between FM participation and screen time, sleep, and physical activity. This project has been accepted for presentation at the 2020 American Public Health Association (APHA) annual meeting and a manuscript is currently in preparation for submission to the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. Recently, Mr. Murphy was involved in a multi-state, multi-disciplinary umbrella review investigating the effects of diet and/or physical activity intervention and prevention programs with parent/caregiver engagement on obesity among children ages three to twelve. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of diet and physical activity interventions that described parent involvement, included a comparator/control, and measured child weight/weight status as a primary outcome among children aged 3–12 years old were included. The findings from this study support the inclusion of a parent component in both treatment and prevention interventions to improve child weight/weight status outcomes.As a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) at OSU, Mr. Murphy has taken on the role of both teaching assistant and instructor. He has independently led food and nutrition laboratory classes for undergraduate students and was the sole instructor of record for two senior-level nutrition courses, Nutrition 446, Managing Food and Nutrition Services, and Nutrition 447, Management of Food Systems Laboratory.
