As the Director of Innovation at San Jose State University (SJSU), Dr. Muthig lead the definition and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan supporting innovation, technology transfer, commercialization and economic development activities. This included promoting the generation of SJSU IP and supporting the formation of startups and commercialization of technology. He will leverage contacts in the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Silicon Valley and beyond to connect faculty and students with the training, development and venture support. He was responsible for establishing strategies, priorities, policies, and procedures for the innovation programs at SJSU and served as primary representative of the Office of Innovation and SJSU on innovation and entrepreneurship related issues. The Office of Innovation is part of the SJSU Division of Research & Innovation.

Dr. Muthig joined the Center for Innovation to help develop, implement, and grow TechComm, a new multi-agency technology transfer and commercialization program focused on promoting economic growth through the development and commercialization of technologies from the federal labs and affiliate partners. TechComm is a public-private partnership focused on the development and commercialization of emerging technologies to solve pressing national needs, create innovative products, generate jobs, and stimulate economic growth. TechComm represents a coalition of government agencies and their federal labs, as well as corporate, academic, and venture capital affiliates. TechComm works through our network of federal labs and affiliate partners to obtain support of business and industry, engage the venture-capital community, and host international technology transfer events.

Dr. Muthig returned to CTC to develop and implement a new multi-million dollar program focused on promoting economic growth through the development and commercialization of innovative technologies. The program includes four primary components: analyzing, marketing and licensing patented technologies from defense labs, accelerating the development and commercialization of innovative technologies, creating partnerships to access unique federal lab capabilities, and facilitating access by small business to funding for research and development of new technologies. Dr. Muthig is the project manager for this effort and has the lead in developing and implementing the overall program. He is also the patent licensing task manager.

As Senior Licensing Associate in the Intellectual Property Office, Dr. Muthig worked with faculty, staff, and private sector companies to identify, protect, license, and commercialize promising technologies. He was involved with all aspects of intellectual propery managmnet, including faculty outreach, evaluating invention disclosures, marketing technologies, patent preparation and prosecution, identifying licensees, negotiating option and license agreements, license monitoring, consulting on sponsored research agreements, assisting in new faculty start ups, and advising the University community on all aspects of technology transfer. Dr. Muthig has worked with discoveries from many disciplines including physical sciences, engineering, chemistry, biotechnology, marine science, biotechnology, computer software and hardware, sensors and probes, and imaging technologies. He has also worked with an extensive portfolio of nanotechnologies donated to the Research Foundation from a large private company.

Dr. Muthig coordinated projects to assess, develop, transfer, and commercialize emerging technologies. He was also technical lead for efforts to assess and redevelop abandoned or underutilized industrial properties (brownfields).

Dr. Muthig directed environmental assessment and remediation activities at various facilities across the southeast US. He also participated as a member of the corporate planning team.

Dr. Muthig provided technical oversight and project management for assessment and corrective action programs and participated in audits to evaluate regulatory status and compliance. Duties included the following:• Performing various administrative duties such as hiring and performance appraisals.• Developing guidelines and protocols for implementing environmental regulations.• Assisting staff on technical and administrative issues.• Provided expert testimony at public meetings and administrative or adjudicatory hearings.• Assisting in program implementation (program plans, grant applications, and project tracking).

Determined the technical and regulatory adequacy of groundwater monitoring programs at hazardous waste and RCRA sites. Duties included:• Reviewing hazardous waste permit applications and assisting in permit preparation.• Evaluating technical suitability of monitoring, assessment, and corrective action plans.• Conducting comprehensive groundwater monitoring evaluations and sampling inspections.
