For Wetlands International I manage and coordinate multiple projects/programmes. Besides this I also provide technical expertise on themes such as water management, land restoration and sustainable agricultural practices. Most of my projects are located in Ethiopia, here we support the Basin Development Office in Hawassa in order to set up a Water Allocation Plan and to build capacity within their organisation in order to execute this plan. Finally I am also actively involved in coordinating the network of Wetlands International on the theme of Rivers and Lakes. This platform is used for the different country and regional offices to come together and discuss stratigic issues or learn from each other.

My position at Wetlands International is through the Young Expert Programme and partially funded by World Waternet (one of the partner organisations of the Ziway-Shalla: Basin in Balance project in which I am involved). Young Experts receive intensive training and coaching as part of the learning agility approach. With a focus on self-awareness, the Young Experts identify opportunities for professional development and personal growth, to be able to focus in their work on change, stakeholders and results. Personally, YEP greatly helped me improve my intercultural awareness & communication, management abilities and a better sense of my own strengths & weaknesses.

Shijiazhuang, Hebei, China

MSc Thesis on nitrate pollution to groundwater in China. A modelling attempt was made by combining the NUFER model and the VIC model to get insight into nitrate concentrations in groundwater for all counties in China. The results identify key regions where nitrate pollution is problematic and how much nitrogen pollution needs to be reduced in these counties to reach Chinese and EU policy goals. Research was done at the Center for Agricultural Resources Research in Shijiazhuang, China.

Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso

Internship for four Dutch Water Authorities that work in cooperation with the Water Authorities in Burkina Faso. Through this cooperation I researched water conflict issues in the Kou River basin. The final result was an explorative study that focused on the perspective of local farmers. This showed the severity of the conflict, which players are involved and what possible solutions farmers view as best.

Pontianak Area, West Kalimantan, Indonesia

Internship for Oasen and PDAM Pontianak (Dutch and Indonesian drinking water companies) focused on the feasibility of a drinkwater reservoir in the river Jawi. This would provide freshwater to a part of the city of Pontianak during the dry period when water taken from the Kapuas river is saline.
