This program aims to gather the next cadre of leading strategic scholars and practitioners and has been credited with establishing "the schoolhouse for developing strategic thinking about the future of war.” ​​

The Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University seeks to promote a just and peaceful world through research, teaching, and public engagement.The Watson Institute is a community of scholars, practitioners, and students whose work aims to help us understand and address these critical challenges. It is dedicated to meaningful social science research and teaching, and animated by the conviction that informed policy can change systems and societies for the better.Focus areas: Poverty and inequality. Natural disasters and ethnic conflict. Rapid urbanization and climate change. Globalized labor standards and cyber threats. Our increasingly interconnected 21st-century world is rife with challenges that affect us all. Crafting solutions to those problems requires rigorous research, real-world experience, and creative thinking.

PPNT gives participants the knowledge and analytic tools they need to contribute to the debate on future U.S. nuclear policy. The boot camp features lectures, discussions, debates, and policy simulations. Participants attend talks by distinguished researchers, academics, policy officials, and operational specialists from leading universities, the National Laboratories, international organizations, and government agencies, on topics ranging from current nuclear threats, international safeguards, and nonproliferation strategies. The course is part of long-standing IGCC work on nuclear policy issues. Support for this program is provided by the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration and The Stanton Foundation.

SWAMOS exposes young scholars to a body of knowledge that is seldom made available in conventional graduate programs in order to: encourage some of them to specialize in the field; to nurture a critical mass of academics competent to contribute to defense policy debates; to preserve expertise in strategic studies outside of government; and to foster a network of analysts committed to supporting each other and promoting the field within academia.The workshop includes readings, lectures, seminars, informal discussions, campaign planning simulations, formal military modeling, and film screenings. Participants receive roughly 850 pages of assigned reading to complete before arriving at the Workshop and read 25-50 additional pages each night during the workshop, to prepare for the next day’s session. Numerous social activities promote interaction professional friendships and network-building among the next generation of strategic analysts.The program takes participants from the general to the specific, beginning with basic philosophical questions about the relationship between the conduct of war and the objectives of foreign policy. Subsequent sessions provide a comparative historical perspective on net assessment; analyze linkages among strategy, combat operations, and tactics; and examine subjects such as military effectiveness and logistics. The program also emphasizes analytical techniques available for assessing force structures and defense programs. The Workshop seeks to expose participants to competing approaches, introducing them to key debates and lines of development in the field, and bridging the theoretical and policy sides of military analysis.
