I was a member of the Advanced Technology group that is developing and building a prototype 50kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell(SOFC) and mechanical balance of plant for operation(MBOP). This included learning and reading information from a Process and Instrument Diagram (P&ID.) Also working with multiple suppliers responsible for design and fabrication of critical systems within the balance of plant.I was also part of a small team that was responsible for designing and building a lab scale demonstration of a carbon capture technique. In the future this technique could take exhaust flue gas from a fossil fuel burning power plant and separate out the carbon dioxide into a liquid form. This project involved extensive use of Autodesk Inventor for the mechanical layout of all the necessary equipment and being part of a HAZOP to ensure safe operation of the system.

Optiwind is a startup business that developed a 300 kW wind turbine. The technology used in the turbine is optimized for the distributed wind market, meaning the power is kept on site. The turbine uses wind accelerating technology to allow use in low wind areas. The turbine does not share many of the drawbacks that a conventional 3-bladed design would have and can be used in highly populated areas. The turbine has a very low installation cost, for example, it does not need a crane for installation or improved roads to the job site.I have been a mechanical engineer for many projects within the company. These include the first generation of the platform support system, yaw drive system, platform lift system and the turbine brake system. Of these projects I was the project manager for the turbine brake system. I have also provided engineering support for the second generation platform support system, brake system fixturing, platform soldering fixture and hands-on experience working with the job site crew on the prototype build site.During my time at Optiwind I have learned and frequently used many skills in design and manufacturing. I have training in advanced SolidWorks modeling and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. I have experience in designing steel casting, aluminum die-casting, CNC machined parts, stampings, laser cut plate, welded assemblies, galvanizing, bolted joints and plastic injection molding. Part of my job has included conversing with and travelling to international manufacturing houses. Most of the work has been in an environment with ever-evolving schedules and specifications.

Analyzed data for the Electro-Magnetic Rail Gun; illustrated the effect of projectile velocity as a function of the number of capacitor banks discharged from the power supply sequentially. Created figures of amperage, voltage and kinetic energy that were used to ensure safe operation for the first test shots. Used Simulink EMRG HVP 6DOF model with various flight scenarios to analyze time variance of AOA, yaw, acceleration and velocity. Also the relationship between strike energy, range and the variance to gun elevation was explored.
