My time as a CFR intern at TJX expanded my technical and interpersonal skills beyond my expectations. I expected to receive repetitive tasks that are generally reserved for interns. This expectation could not have been further from the truth. My technical skills were greatly enhanced as my day to day responsibilities in CFR had me helping to consolidate the financial statements of the corporate entities’ seven divisions into USD. This work helped to ensure timely and accurate financial statements for the corporate segment were delivered to internal and external sources. I also had the opportunity to assist in the preparation of corporate segment’s second quarter press release and 10Q including management discussion and analysis. Attending meetings enhanced my knowledge of how corporate accounting departments interact with external sources such as the SEC, external auditors and shareholders in the company. These meetings included sitting in on the company’s quarterly earnings call, first quarter filing with the SEC, and informational meetings with both internal and external audit teams. My interpersonal and leadership skills were also improved through the intern project that I worked on in addition to my responsibilities with the CFR department. This project entailed working with a team of five other interns to develop a savings plan for the distribution centers owned by HomeGoods (one of the several divisions of TJX). I took a leadership role in the detention charge portion of the project as I created a financial model that showed how the company could save upwards of five hundred thousand dollars by reducing the time it takes to empty trailers. This project was eventually presented to, and received well by, an executive audience that included two CFO’s from within the company. I cannot wait to utilize all I have learned from this internship throughout the rest of my career!

My time as a bank teller at Webster First Federal Credit Union taught me valuable lessons and provided me with skills that are transferable across numerous functions in finance, accounting, operations and management. Hired during the summer of my sophomore year, I expected the job to primarily reinforce my mathematical and customer service skills. In reality, the job provided me with a wealth of knowledge concerning business operations. Over the summer I spent at Webster First Federal Credit Union, I honed my attention to detail by processing teller transactions for members. These teller transactions included servicing member accounts, accepting loan payments, cashing checks, balancing cash drawers, and correcting discrepancies. My attention to detail was further enhanced as I assisted managers in the auditing of the vault and cash drawers of the credit union branches. My knowledge of financial principles and practices were greatly enhanced as my job required me to learn laws and procedures from the Bank Secrecy Act, U.S Patriot Act, etc. My ability to work cross functionally with other departments within an organization was also greatly enhanced as I regularly collaborated with co-workers from departments such as accounting, legal, mortgage servicing, loan servicing, etc. The foundation my time at Webster First Federal Credit Union provided me with is invaluable as I move forward in my business career.

My time as a produce clerk at The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company taught me valuable lessons and provided me with skills that are transferrable across all occupations. Hired as a junior in high school, I expected to stock fruits and vegetables for minimum wage and that was it. In reality, the job was much more rewarding and valuable than I ever could have imagined. Over the three years I spent at Stop and Shop, I honed my organizational and multitasking skills by overseeing the organization of over 500 items on the produce sales floor and back storage area. My attention to detail was also been greatly improved through my through my time at Stop and Shop. The job required me to ensure the quality of the highly perishable produce items on the sales floor and dispose of items not meeting high quality standards. While such skills will stay with me for the rest of my life, the most valuable skill my job at Stop and Shop instilled me with is the ability to communicate with clients and customers effectively. My ability to adequately resolve consumer inquiries and complaints increased exponentially due to the job requiring me to interact with customers constantly. My tenure with Stop & Shop was engaging, enjoyable, and most of all rewarding. I could have never imagined as a junior in high school that my job at Stop and Shop would have such an impact on my life.
