As a child, I learned to live an outward life. My parents modeled servant leadership, and surrounded our family with an amazing group of people, community leaders in business, education, military service, and ministry. During my teenage years, I served as Drum Major of my High School band, as a member of a travelling ministry impact team, and as a member-at-large on a board that regulated ministry activity for a group of around a thousand young people. Ours was a hard-working, entrepreneurial family, so I was never idle. I kept busy working part-time on my Grandparents' cattle ranch, in my Dad's businesses (hauling hay, tree surgery, and firewood delivery), my Mom's upholstery and furniture refinishing business, and for myself at a restaurant. As a family, we also raised much of our food every year, meat, milk, and garden vegetables. We made our own cheese and yogurt, baked our own bread, and ate well from the sweat of our own labor.Over the course of my life since, I have constantly found applications for the lessons I learned early on. I have worked in nuclear propulsion in the US Navy and on locomotives for the Santa Fe Railway. I have set up and optimized sawmills and wood milling equipment. I have built and operated a sawmill business, selling railroad crossties, industrial lumber, wooden stakes, and specialized hardwood materials. I have managed people, processes, equipment, and money.I have worked with water systems (including radioactively contaminated water), steam, compressed air, hydraulics, HVAC, and electric systems. I have designed and fabricated high pressure hydrostatic test systems, and conducted tests. I have operated a crane and managed rigging in industrial settings, including in nuclear settings. I have calibrated measuring devices, gauges, and controls. On the other hand, I have also lived on a remote rural homestead with my family. For several years we grew and foraged for almost everything we ate. My wife and I have served together in ministry informally from 1997, then formally since 2003. Our nine children have been raised on the land, with appreciation for it. They can grow plants and animals, and turn them into great food. They can sing the songs from our culture here in the hills, and play traditional instruments. Yet, they are also engaged in the larger world, and many of them are in business for themselves. Some other teams I have built have dispersed and disbanded, or are operating without my involvement. But our children and their families live nearby, and are carrying on the legacy of service to others.
