Prior to joining industryHe completed his endocrinology fellowship at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA). He was a lieutenant commander in the US Navy Reserve. He established both a private practice and an independent non-profit diabetes research company in Lexington, KY. While in Lexington he was also the medical director for the outpatient practices of Humana, Inc. He has served as a faculty member at the University of Washington, University of Louisville, Southern Illinois University (Springfield, IL) and East Carolina University (Greenville, NC). He was tenured in the last three organizations and a full professor in the last two universities. He was chief of endocrinology at East Carolina University. In addition to clinical and administrative responsibilities, he conducted NIH, ADA, VAMC and industry sponsored research in diabetes and its complications (especially neuropathy). He was an investigator in the DCCT. He has over 300 published articles and abstracts. Mike has served as editor-in-chief for Diabetes Advisor and later Diabetes Forecast (both ADA publications). He has received awards from ADA for service and DCCT contributions. In addition, Mike received independent awards for an educational school video about diabetes (Telly Award) and two separate writing awards for an article on neuropathy and an editorial for Diabetes Forecast. He edited the sixth and seventh (current) editions of Levin and O’Neal’s The Diabetic Foot (Elsevier Publishing) and the All three editions of The Uncomplicated Guide to Diabetes Complications (ADA publishing). He represented the ADA on the NBC TODAY SHOW where The Uncomplicated Guide to Diabetes Complications was profiled.Industry experience is listed below Dr. Pfeifer was the President of the Greater New York City ADA affiliate in 2012.

He has helped and continues to work on methods to coalesce diabetes and obesity activities within the family of J&J companies. He was instrumental in the T1DM program and the Diamyd project. He is and has been the J&J Credo Champion for PRD for two years.
