In December 2010, Dr. Pfeifer joined the Diabetes Care Franchise (DCF) of Johnson and Johnson as the Chief Medical Officer. DCF is comprised of both LifeScan (Meters and Digital Solutions) and Animas (insulin pumps). He leads a team of people in terms of clinical trials, safety, investigator initiated studies, publications, clinical operations, KOL outreach, enrichment, artificial pancreas, HECOR, statistics and meter and digital solutions development. LifeScan (glucose meters), Animas (insulin pumps), Calibra (patch bolus delivery system) and Digital Solutions (Stand Alone Diabetes Software) are all part of the Diabetes Care Franchise.

Until 2010, Dr. Pfeifer was at Pharmaceutical Research & Development, LLC, which is a Johnson and Johnson company. He was the global metabolism franchise development leader and has responsibilities, which include in-licensing, acquisitions, due diligence and development of CDP for metabolic agents. In addition, he led a team for an agent in full-development (late stage 2b/3) and is the clinical lead for several pre-clinical agents. He sits on several development teams in the metabolic full development franchise. His activities include products in the small molecule, biologics and cell therapy arena in various degrees of development including Preclinical, Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3. He works closely with strategic marketing, pharmacoviligence, health economics, pricing, clin-pharm, formulations, regulatory, manufacturing, pre-clinical and safety. In 2007 he organized a cross company scientific meeting on obesity and diabetes of more 100 participants from the J&J companies. He was set up and run the global metabolism advisory boards for J&J in 2005, 2006 and 2007. In addition, he has set up mini-advisory boards meetings for specific scientific questions related to ongoing agent studies or development. These include mini-advisory boards for osteopenia, CHF, DME, T1DM, vulvaginitis, UTI, renal physiology and bone metabolism. . He has established the publication, KOL development, out-reach and life cycle plans for metabolic agents. He has helped and continues to work on methods to coalesce diabetes and obesity activities within the family of J&J companies. He was instrumental in the T1DM program and the Diamyd project. He is and has been the J&J Credo Champion for PRD for two years. Dr. Pfeifer received an Encore Award in 2006 & 2007, the Standards of Leadership award in 2007 and the Platinum Encore Award in 2008.

At Novo Nordisk Dr. Pfeifer directed a team of individuals who were responsible for all US medical activities (clinical trials, ethnic outreach, investigator initiated trials, CME, ME, KOL development, copy review, safety, pharmacoviligence and publications) for the diabetes portfolio (Pre-Mix insulins [70/30, 50/50 & 30/70], basal insulin [Levemir], rapid acting insulin [NovoLog], glucagons kits, pens, cartridges for pumps, meters, safety needles and an oral antidiabteic agent [Prandin]). He had seven direct reports.

At Sanofi, Dr. Pfeifer was responsible for the pre-launch activities and for the development of an eight-year post-approval medical plan for Acomplia (the first-in-class CB-1 antagonist) for anti-smoking, anti-hyperlipidemia, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity. Advisory boards met frequently and included separate boards on smoking, physiology, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, lipids, cardiovascular, African-American, health outcomes and primary care. Five year budget and draft protocol trial designs were integral to the position. He supervised a matrix team of 15-20 individuals and had 6 direct reports. All US plans were closely alined with global plans. KOL development, primary care outreach, product strategy, segmentation plans, clinical trials, health economics, epidemiology, PRO, ethnic outreach, publications plans and budgets were part of the eight-year plan. Training sales and marketing as well as serving as a medical/clinical resource were part of the duties. He participated in one early development team.

Dr. Pfeifer joined the pharmaceutical industry in 2001 and has served as the medical franchise leader and senior medical director in US Medical Affairs for diabetes, metabolism and obesity at Aventis. While at Aventis, he launched Lantus insulin (the first long acting basal insulin analog), which has become the most successful insulin ever launched. During his Aventis experience, he worked in the areas of clinical trials (wrote and was clinical leader for most of the Lantus post-marketing trials including two trials of 4000 and 6000 subjects respectively with a total of 4000 clinical sites mostly PCP), copy review, SAP and results, KOL development, outreach programs, publications, segmentation programs, epidemiology, IITs, public relations, label changes, CME and symposiums, primary care program and patient education. Sales training was an activity in which he also participated. He worked closely with marketing and sales as a medical/clinical resource and training. He participated in several early development teams and assisted in programs with other metabolic agents (Amaryl and Apidra). While at Aventis, Dr. Pfeifer received an Outstanding Performer Award and a Special President’s Award.
