  • United States Marine Corps
    Usmc, Security Force Commander (Pss)
    United States Marine Corps 2003 - 2005
    Ramada, Iraq
(Ramada, Iraq) As a Convoy Security Commander, my responsibilities were to look over the standard operating procedures (SOP) of the unit and evaluate their effectiveness. The goal was to remove unnecessary or ineffective procedures, resulting in a concise SOP. I was also responsible for security on convoys for the Assistant Division Commander (ADC). I routinely developed security plans for the immediate area, personal security for generals, and exit plans. One of my convoys took small arms fire and indirect fire from the inner city of Ramadi. We were guarding the ADC at the governor center when the word came over the radio of a target with a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG). I was overseeing the positions of six High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV), and the Second Lieutenant was in the Governor Center helping the ADC. I reported the status of the current situation outside, and then contacted the Scout Snipers on the roof and the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) back at Camp Hurricane Point. The target then took cover and launched eight RPG’s into the compound. The second part of the attack was a four man team of targets, who opened fire on us from the alley across the way that opened up on the middle of Governor Center. We then took cover, put down some suppressive fire, and held down the four man team until the QRF got eyes on them. Once we received word from the QRF and the Snipers that all was clear, we got the ADC to Blue Diamond. While reviewing the intelligence from the day before and the day of our attack, I helped discover that the governor’s aide was the providing the targets with information about our positions.
