Dr. Placke is a highly experienced pharmaceutical drug development executive with over 35 years of pharmaceutical industry experience, including scientific and operational responsibilities for multi-disciplinary pharmaceutical development operations, including Drug Safety and Metabolism (DSM), Discovery Research, and Chemical Product Development (CPD) Divisions in large pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies. Most recently, Head, Global Nonclinical Development & US Drug Discovery at Shire Pharmaceuticals. Prior to this was Senior Vice President of Drug Safety and Metabolism at Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, and prior to Alnylam was President & CEO of Ricerca Biosciences. Previously was VP, Drug Safety at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (and Pfizer post acquisition), and before joining Wyeth he was VP, R&D of a private equity/venture-funded start-up firm developing novel respiratory drug therapies. He has experience in developing a wide array of drug product modalities including small molecules, biologics, siRNA therapies, vaccines, and specialty drug products. He has led multiple organizations with operating budgets of $40 - 50M and over 300 staff. Dr. Placke has a record of accomplishments in research and development of advancing drugs from late discovery through market registration, with advanced leadership skills and expertise in assessment of new pharmaceutical therapies and technologies. He is formally trained in experimental pathology and toxicology, earning BS and MS degrees from The Ohio State University and his PhD from the University of Connecticut.
