Michael consulted citizens with housing and public health concerns by explaining the Revised Code of Washington’s Landlord Tenant Law (RCW 59.18) and empowering citizens to resolve housing issues. Michael also coordinated a low-cost air quality monitor project to collect, analyze, and disseminate information to strengthen partnerships and create a tool for local organizations to make public health decisions during poor air quality events. This work aims to create a tool and system for organizations to use to make decisions during poor air quality events. Michael also responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by acting as a contact tracer, volunteer coordinator, and community liaison for COVID-19 vaccine community outreach and education. In these roles, Michael supported the incident command response to COVID-19 and supporting the current needs of the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, Pierce County, and the people that live, work, and play in our community.

As a Health Protection Intern, Michael assisted with the environmental operations and programs that are carried out from the department. These operations included reviewing the rabies exposure protocol when dealing with bats in the area and helping plan the annual mosquito larvicide application municipality meeting.

Leader in the residence halls who helps create community by planning health-related programs and engaging students to become successful during their undergraduate careers. These programs include service events, meet and greets with faculty, and field trips to promote friendship, community, and togetherness.

Working as a mosquito control technician, Michael applied larvicides per label instructions guaranteeing that proper safety precautions were met while also treating sites with larvae and pupae present. Michael also attended Boulder County Public Health meetings to act as a representative of the other technicians in the field to educate the community members on what activity was being seen in the field.
