I investigated how controlled motion at the front section (leading edge) of a flapping airfoil impacts the aerodynamic forces generated and the theoretical energy harvesting efficiency. I built a wing with a motorized leading edge segment which was used in wind tunnel testing. In addition to the experimental work, I also implemented a low order model (panel method) in python to determine whether the model is appropriate as a research and design tool for the parameter range tested. The model included vortex shedding at the leading and trailing edges to capture transient aerodynamics including flow separation.
