Michael Pullin, Ph.D., is the Dean of Academic Initiatives in the Office of Academic Affairs at Queensborough Community College. He oversees academic program development, transfer and articulation agreements, the Transfer Resource Center, and the Career Services Center. He assists departments with program and curriculum changes and with the development of the college catalog.Michael also leads a set of student success programs including, CUNY Start (developmental immersion), the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP), College Now (dual enrollment at NYC public schools), the Business Technology Early College High School (BTECH), and the college’s NYC Men Teach program. He developed and is currently leading a Department of Education Hispanic Serving Institutions (Title V) grant to improve first year student success and retention. As part of that project, he is leading the redevelopment of the college's First Year Experience, the launch of a campus-wide supplemental instruction program, and new faculty development program in effective and culturally relevant pedagogy. Dr. Pullin earned a B.A. in Chemistry from Case Western Reserve University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Analytical Chemistry from Kent State University. After earning his Ph.D., he was awarded a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship to conduct research in Environmental Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following that appointment, he served as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame. In 2004, he moved to the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry, eventually earning tenure and becoming the Chairperson of the Chemistry Department. While at New Mexico Tech, he conducted externally-funded research in Environmental Chemistry. He also led a number education and outreach programs that focused on freshman retention, the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minority students in STEM, and the successful transfer of community college students to STEM degree programs at four-year institutions. In 2014, Dr. Pullin joined Broward College where he was the Associate Dean of Science. There, he led a multi-disciplinary science department with nearly 100 faculty members. He also developed an NSF-funded Innovative Science Teaching Institute that assisted faculty in transforming their classrooms through the use of engaging and evidence-based teaching approaches. Dr. Pullin left Broward College to join Queensborough Community College in 2018.
