Michael is Principal Heritage Architect within the SA DEW Heritage SA heritage management team. He contributes to heritage policy, is involved in planning reform, manages the Heritage Management team and provides heritage advice to owners and developers of State Heritage Places in accordance with the SA Heritage Places Act. Michael has been a past member of the SA Heritage Council. He is a recently retired member of Australia ICOMOS's Executive Committee - Australia's peak heritage NGO. Michael is currently managing the Exposition and Trade Fair for the 2023 ICOMOS Global Assembly in Sydney. As a Visiting Fellow of the School of Architecture, Uni Adelaide, Michael has written and delivered a new course focusing on South Australian architectural history - focusing on styles, architects and the social influences behind the architecture. Michael was also Chair of the Australian Institute of Architects SA 20th Century Group, responsible for the development of a Significant SA Architecture Register in 1999. Prior to joining Heritage SA, Michael's conservation work has involved the preparation of over twenty CMPs for buildings such as Government House, Adelaide, and the conservation and adaptation of heritage listed buildings such as 1936 Torrens Parade Ground, Adelaide and the 1880 Marble Hill Governor’s summer residence, Ashton. Several AIA heritage awards have been received in recognition of our conservation skills - most recently for the conservation of the 1880 Museum of Economic Botany, Adelaide Botanic Garden. Michael has been a Heritage Adviser to Local Government - Adelaide Hills Council (2006-16), Light Regional Council (2008-16), Burnside (2016) and in Victoria, Warrnambool City and Moyne Shire Councils (2011-16). Michael has been involved in the preparation of regional and city heritage surveys, preparation/peer review of Heritage DPAs and has provided expert opinions in planning courts regarding heritage values.
