I am a Principal Consultant Ecologist with WSP, with specialist skills in ornithology as well as having a wide range of other ecological knowledge. I have particular expertise in the collection and interpretation of ornithological survey data relating to proposed development sites, for which he has prepared technical reports and ornithological chapters/text for inclusion in Environmental Statements. I have also managed projects for a wide range of developments including proposed onshore wind farm sites (including Nationally Important Infrastructure Projects-NSIP) that involve ornithological survey work and liaison with consultees such as Natural England and RSPB. This work is supported by his in depth knowledge of bird ecology, fieldwork design, population trends and distribution. I also have a wide range of other ecological knowledge, with experience in undertaking extended Phase 1 habitat surveys, ecological walkover surveys, and reptile, water vole and great crested newt surveys.

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the UK’s main scheme for monitoring the population changes of widespread terrestrial bird species in the UK. During my time in this role, I increased coverage from 2,100 to 3,300 sites, using targeted email methods, now widely adopted by the BTO. Key responsibilities for the position included:• Management of 2,700 volunteer fieldworkers and 100 local scheme organisers (distribute/collect recording forms, capture/verify data, deal with volunteer enquiries and land access issues);• Manage the BBS Oracle database, online web application and web pages. Act as data manager for the BBS mammal dataset on the National Biodiversity Network. • Communication and negotiate with funding partners (JNCC and RSPB) on BBS methodological and promotional issues to ensure continued development of the scheme.• Analyse BBS data and deliver results to the scheme partners.• Promotion and dissemination of BBS results, involving writing articles, reports and giving presentations to the birdwatching, scientific and professional conservation community. Deal with press and media enquiries.• Run training courses in bird and habitat survey techniques, attended by staff from consultancies, Government Agencies and NGOs as well as volunteer fieldworkers.• Provide advice on the use of BBS data to researchers, environmental consultants, NGO’s, etc.• Provide advice on bird and mammal monitoring techniques to environmental consultants, NGOs, etc..

I was responsible for the organisation of the BTO’s Nest Record Scheme (NRS) - a long-running volunteer based survey, involving more than 500 participants who record the outcome of bird nesting attempts. My responsibilities also included the management of the NRS database, survey promotion and reporting.
