My research has focused on understanding the various mechanisms enzymes use to enhance reaction rates and investigating these issues with physical approaches. My doctoral dissertation work in the lab of Professor Brian Dyer at Emory University focused on the roles of protein conformational changes to support enzyme catalysis and utilized optical spectroscopy, microfluidics, and calorimetry. I expanded my knowledge of enzymes through my postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University in the lab of Professor F. Peter Guengerich. My work in the Guengerich lab focused on characterizing the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes. I have developed an expertise in protein expression and purification, rapid kinetics methods, liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. My work has made me an expert in enzymology, protein structure, and biophysical methods. I am currently leading my own research lab at Appalachian State University where I am coupling my experience with biophysical techniques with my interest in the activity of P450 enzymes. My research is enhanced by several university teaching experiences including as an instructor for Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and General Chemistry.
