Human prolactin confers chemoresistance by upregulating glutathione-s-transferace (GST). GST causes both taxanes and platins to be actively transported out of cancer cells, thereby causing resistance. Furthermore, by blocking prolactin receptors on cancer cells, Prolanta disrupts the interaction of glutathione binding (by downregulating glutathione s-transferase) to platinum. This binding causes transport of platinum outside of the cell, which is a cause of platinum resistance.
