The incumbent serves as Chief Archivist/Curator, the Navy Medical Department Archives, maintaining primary responsibility for direction and operation of the archives program within the Navy Medical Department’s Medical History Department. This position requires specialized knowledge of medical history, especially military medicine, to administer and manage a diverse collection of public records, manuscripts, personal papers, hospital plans, Navy Hygiene Museum records, medical records, films, videos, photographs, prints, drawings, institutional records of the Navy Medical Department, personal papers donated to the Office of Medical History, organizational records (the official records of another institution that have been donated to the History Department), fine arts, including oil paintings and books, gathered and preserved by the History Department. The History Department currently consists of over 100 collections covering over 1,000 linear feet. The collection is priceless and the archivist acts as their primary custodian. The position operates as archives administrator and generalist performing all archival functions in a variety of subject areas. Supervises interns, volunteers, archival contractors. Reports to Director, Communications Department for general supervision, but is imbued with the authority to act independently on tasks and determine the perimeters of tasks.
