About Michael Richter
What does the future look like? For me, it's all about technological advancement, especially in biology. During my undergrad, I discovered the thrill of using microbes to produce specific compounds and fine-tuning processes to optimize production. After graduation, I shifted my focus to plant pathology, honing in on a fungal organism that causes a disease on rice. My passion for complexity led me to explore redox + lipid metabolism and tRNA-mediated regulation of translation in fungi.Over the years, I've relished collaborating with my lab members, graduate students, and postdocs from various departments. Meeting new people is exciting, but learning from them and sharing professional and personal insights is most fulfilling. Leadership roles in teaching and student organizations helped me realize my passion for communication, collaboration, and organization. I also embraced the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), recognizing the importance of a community where everyone is respected and valued.Looking ahead, I aspire to work in a company where I can share a common vision and continue to learn from others. While academia has equipped me with research and teaching skills, I see great potential for growth in the industry, particularly in teamwork, product development, and marketing.A few fun facts about me:1.) I love capturing trips with my camera and GoPro, then spending hours editing videos, even if I'm the only one who watches them.2.) Most nights, you'll find me sketching on my graphic tablet, often creating gifts for those I care about.3.) When overwhelmed, I turn to my laptop and pour my thoughts into a diary, finding freedom in writing.4.) On weekends (when I'm not in the lab), I'm experimenting with bread baking, trying different techniques to perfect—or hilariously fail at—creating the best bread.

Graduate Research Assistant
Advisor: Dr. Richard WilsonResearch on the rice-blast causing ascomycete Magnaporthe oryzae to study plant-fungal interactions at a molecular level by generating single-gene deletions and characterization of knockout mutants. This involves examining genes involved in antioxidation and lipid metabolism, as well as characterizing tRNA-mediated regulation of.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Worked in collaboration with fellow TAs to coordinate the Complex Biosystems seminar series (CBIO843) by arranging speakers, sending out announcement flyers and supervising students.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Created and presented lectures in bacteriology to graduate students in the plant pathology introduction class (PLPT801). Supervised students and managed the portal for assignments and grades.
Learning Assistant
Led recitations of the science and decision-making class (SCIL101) and graded student assignments.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Teaching two sections of an introductory biology class (LIFE120L) that involved the supervision of students in a laboratory as well as giving lectures about fundamental concepts of biology.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
Research on mycoviruses that can be exploited as biocontrols for fungal pathogens. Using bioinformatics tools, novel mycovirus sequences were filtered from publically available Puccinia graminis RNA-seq data and subsequently analyzed regarding phylogeny.
Undergraduate Research Intern
Characterizing the maize rhizobiome under nitrogen-starvation conditions and exploring the mechanism of a type III secreted effector protein of the plant pathogen Pseudomonoas syringae in Tobacco and Arabidopsis.
