Electrical Engineer I

Current

Free State, South Africa

I am part of the Projects & Engineering group within the Energy Operations division of Sasol, wherein I am the lead electrical engineer on various multi-discipline. Most of the projects were in the feasibility phase, however I was also responsible for projects within the execution phase, which included detail engineering, construction, and commissioning. For these projects I compiled tender technical scope of works, evaluated proposals, and generated technical solutions to business opportunities and presented these to management. Later my responsibilities evolved to include the management of an Engineering Contractor (EC), which included the review of generated design documents and application of project management principles. By utilising problem solving and critical thinking skills as well as stakeholder management, risk management, project controls and sustainability management I can apply value engineering to ensure the most cost-effective solution for the business requirements is provided. Throughout this period, I also applied the knowledge I gained from my studies to complete my master’s degree in engineering management, such as systems engineering, people management and asset management. Alongside the projects I also updated various Sasol datasheets and standard drawings, which are used by Sasol throughout Southern Africa.Recent projects that I wish to highlight include:1) Switchgear replacement project for a 525V substation.2) Design, construction and commissioning of new electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) to ensure our power stations comply with new regulation and our commitment towards sustainability.4) DCS replacement at power generation plant.5) Upgrade of plant equipment to produce latest generation of catalyst.6) Design of a green fields Data Centre to improve the Cyber Security of the entire plant.

Electrical Engineer In Training (Eit)

Sasolburg, Free State, South Africa

As part of Sasol’s Graduate Development Program (GDP), I was put through a 3-year program designed to prepare us for registering as a Professional Engineer. I used the program to gain experience in the chemical and energy plant environment and the projects associated with them. The first year I was focussed on gaining experience regarding everyday operations and maintenance of various sections of the Sasolburg plants. This allowed me to gain valuable technical and maintenance related knowledge, and it tested my communication and critical thinking skills. I conducted various studies for the Technical Support Services group that included analysing the loading of various substations and how best to upgrade them. Another study focussed on how best to operate a critical product plant during a fault condition when one of the incoming supplies are lost. This study was used as the basis for a future project. The second and third year I focussed on gaining experience and knowledge related to the execution of multi-disciplinary projects. I was responsible for the generation of various electrical design documents as part of the deliverables required for the projects. I used specialised software such as Bentley Microstation to produce drawings and DIgSILENT Powerfactory to perform power system studies which would be used to support the project goals. These projects involved multiple project phases, ranging through feasibility engineering all the way to execution and commissioning. Later my responsibilities included acting as the electrical lead on projects. A highlight was the successful overhaul of the Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) of multiple boilers to lower particulate matter levels and reduce Sasol’s environmental impact.

Jan 2018 - Dec 2020

Each House Committee member has a specific portfolio for which they are responsible, and my portfolio was Community Engagement.
