My responsibilities involved providing general supervision of the lab, keeping the workstations clean, assisting students with technical problems with the equipment, and reporting malfunctioning equipment. I would also assist students with homework issues, and provide input with respect to design elements on various projects. The focus of this biomedical engineering lab was to study circuit design and simulation with physical and computer aided models such as LabVIEW. This lab was also used for experiments involving EKG and EMG signal processing using an oscilloscope, 3D design using SolidWorks computer aided design software, and general studies.

I returned to Stryker over winter break to help finish with remaining testing and document processing for the year. I was responsible for the same duties as in the summer internship.

In process and finished goods testing of surgical hemostats. Protein concentration by biuret protein assay using Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. I also was a part of the validation for the new test operating procedure for the protein concentration by biuret assay. Along with the protein concentration testing was pH testing of the surgical hemostat. I performed quality tests for both packaging and products. This includes seal testing using an Instron and product integrity testing according to their particular TOP. I would make sure that their bone scaffolding would react appropriately with the proper cc of plasma, their bioactive glass was free from particulate, and review many different products batch records to insure that everything was accounted for. Review of batch records includes making sure all labels and packaging have been accounted for and those that are left over have been destroyed, if the products were not packaged at our facilities that the vendor has provided test results from sterilization, making sure all of the figures add up correctly, and are signed off for appropriately. If there were any problems with the batch record I was required to find the people who had made a mistake or forgotten to do something and fix the issue. I also organized and managed the retain samples for each product's lot that was produced. The retains were placed into an assigned box and input into a spreadsheet where they could be looked up at a later date in case of an audit or issue with a particular lot of a product. I also gained experience in writing and launching non conformance reports when there was an issue with a product being tested. With my extreme close attention to detail I gained recognition from their VP of operations and corporate VP for my work over the summer.
