The Professional Journalists' Association of South Africa (ProJourn) was established at its founding congress in Johannesburg on 13 March 2010. It is the result of extensive consultations over more than two years in the national journalism community. It is an initiative endorsed by the Press Ombudsman, the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF), the Southern Africa Journalists' Association (SAJA), the Southern African Freelancers' Association (SAFREA), leading members of the country's Press Clubs, journalism educators and a wide range of writers' associations and hundreds of individual journalists.

"The Ulu" is a British Army term derived from a Maylay word for the sticks, the outback, bandit-country. It was adopted by the pioneering journalists of Frontline Television News in their work in Afghanistan and elsewhere off the beaten track. The Ulu Club is a virtual watering-hole for journalists who operate in the world's conflict zones, or who have done so in the past. This is not the place for braggarts - but it is a DMZ where you can hang your kevlar vest, put your muddy trainers up, show your work and swap tales and ideas.
